Do I have to stay involved after selling my business?

No, you do not automatically have to remain involved after selling your business. Whether you need to stay depends on the terms negotiated with the buyer and the requirements of the transaction. Some sellers leave immediately following completion, while others agree to provide temporary support to ensure a smooth transition of operations, employees and customer relationships.

Common post-sale arrangements include:

  • Handover period: You may agree to assist the buyer for several weeks or months by transferring knowledge, introducing key contacts and explaining daily operations.
  • Consultancy or employment: Some buyers request that the seller remains involved in a paid advisory or management role for an agreed period.
  • No ongoing involvement: If the business has an established management team and clear operational processes, the buyer may not require significant assistance after completion.

For example, the owner of a specialist consultancy may agree to remain available for six months to help transfer client relationships, while the seller of a business with experienced managers may leave shortly after completion.

Any ongoing responsibilities should be clearly documented in the sale agreement or a separate consultancy or employment contract.
